Are you planning to buy a used car, but the seller cannot provide a title or gives a questionable year of manufacture? Or maybe you want to check the history of your car before selling it? Determining the real year of manufacture of a car by license plate number is a critical step that will protect against fraud, hidden accidents or โinterruptedโ data. In this article we will analyze all working methods: from decryption VIN code before checking through government services, and we will also tell you why the license plate data often turns out to be false.
Spoiler: the only legal and accurate method is checking through the official traffic police databases by VIN or body/chassis number, but even here there are pitfalls. For example, after replacing the body under compulsory motor liability insurance, the year in the database may be โresetโ to the current one. We have collected services that are relevant for 2026, instructions for deciphering codes, and warnings about popular deception schemes. Read on - and you can independently calculate the real age of the car in 5 minutes.
Why can't you trust the year of manufacture in an ad?
According to Autostat, every fifth used car in Russia has discrepancies in the year of manufacture between the title, advertisement and real data. Fraudsters forge documents using three main schemes:
- ๐ "Rejuvenation" of the machine: a later year is entered on the title (for example, 2018 instead of 2015) to increase the price. Often found in Toyota Camry, Hyundai Solar and Kia Rio.
- ๐ Body replacement: after a serious accident, the car is restored, but the year of the โdonorโ remains in the database. For example, Volkswagen Passat 2012 may be listed as 2019.
- ๐ Duplicate PTS: a different year is indicated in the duplicate, and the original is hidden. Distributed among BMW 5-series and Audi A6 with a mileage of 200 thousand km.
Even honest sellers make mistakes sometimes. For example, Renault Duster The 2020 model could have rolled off the assembly line in December 2019, but the documents indicate 2020. Or vice versa: the car was released in January 2021, but the title says 2020. Such discrepancies are not critical, but it is important to identify them before purchasing.
โ ๏ธ Attention: If the year in the title and the manufacturer's plate (under the hood) do not match, this is a reason to refuse the deal. The likelihood of fraud or a serious accident in the past is 87% (data NBKI).
Method 1: Deciphering the VIN code - the most accurate method
VIN (Vehicle Identification Number) - a unique 17-digit code that is assigned to the vehicle at the factory. It encrypts data about the make, model, year of manufacture and even configuration. You can decrypt it for free - without contacting the traffic police.
Where to look for VIN:
- ๐ On the sign under the windshield (driver's side).
- ๐ช On the driver's door pillar (sometimes duplicated on the passenger door).
- ๐ง Under the hood (on the side members or partition of the engine compartment).
- ๐ In the PTS (line โIdentification number (VIN)โ).
VIN code structure:
1-3 characters โ World Manufacturer Index (WMI),
4-8 โ description of the car (model, body type, engine),
9 - check digit,
10 โ year of manufacture (the most important symbol!),
11 - manufacturer,
12-17 - serial number.
Decoding 10th character (year of manufacture):
| Symbol | Year | Symbol | Year |
|---|---|---|---|
| A | 1980 or 2010 | L | 1990 or 2020 |
| B | 1981 or 2011 | M | 1991 or 2021 |
| C | 1982 or 2012 | N | 1992 or 2022 |
| D | 1983 or 2013 | P | 1993 or 2023 |
| E | 1984 or 2014 | R | 1994 or 2026 |
Example: VIN code XTA211030G1234567 โ 10th character "G" means 2016 (or 1986, but such cars are no longer on the road). To clarify, look 7th character (model year). For Toyota it could be E (2014), F (2015), etc.

Method 2: Checking via license plate number - does not always work
Many people think that you can find out the year of manufacture by the license plate number - this is myth. The license plate number is assigned to the vehicle upon registration with the traffic police and does not contain information about the year. However, there are indirect methods:
- Check through the traffic police database. On the website traffic police.rf You can enter the license plate number and get registration information. But the year of manufacture there is taken from the title, which could have been counterfeited.
- Analysis of the number series. For example, series numbers
AAA 111were issued in 2010โ2013, andTTT 777- from 2020. But this is not an exact reference! - Aggregator services like Autocode or CarVertical. They collect data from various sources but do not guarantee 100% accuracy.
Sample report from Autocode:
License number: M777MM777
Make: LADA Vesta
Year of manufacture (according to PTS): 2019
First registration date: 03/12/2020
Odometer mileage: 45,000 km
Please note: the date of first registration and year of issue may differ by 1-2 years. This is normal if the car has been in a warehouse for a long time or has been cleared through customs.
โ ๏ธ Attention: If the year of issue is indicated in the report as โ1900โ or โ2099โ, this is a sign of an error in the database or falsification of documents. You can't buy a car like this!
By VIN through free services|I order a paid report (Autocode, CarVertical)|I check the data with the title and the plate under the hood|I trust the sellerโs words|I donโt check-->
Method 3: Body or chassis number - alternative to VIN
If the VIN is missing (for example, on old cars) or damaged, you can use body number or chassis number. This data is also duplicated in the vehicle title and on vehicle plates.
Where to look for the body number:
- ๐ On the plate under the hood (next to the VIN).
- ๐ง On side members or thresholds (can be knocked out).
- ๐ In the PTS (line โNumber (chassis, body)โ).
How to determine the year by body number:
- Find the number on the car and in the PTS. They must match. If not, this is a sign of a body replacement.
- For some brands (eg VAZ, GAZ) the year is encrypted in the first digits of the body number. For example,
2107-0012345โ2107this is a model Lada 2107, and the first numbers after the hyphen may indicate the year (but not always!). - Check the number with the manufacturer's database. For example, for Volkswagen this can be done on the website VW VIN decoder.
Example for GAZelle:
Body number GAZ-3302-1234567 - number 3 after the hyphen may mean 2013 (but this is not a rule, just an assumption!). Only an official request to the plant will provide an accurate decoding.
What to do if the body number is erased or interrupted?
If the body number is unreadable or clearly interrupted (uneven numbers, traces of welding), this is a sign of a stolen or damaged car. In this case:
1. Refuse to buy - the risk of losing the car and money is too high.
2. If the car is already yours, contact the traffic police to check the database of stolen vehicles.
3. Order a forensic examination - it will show whether the number has been changed.
Method 4: Official services of the traffic police and government services
The most reliable, but not always accessible, method is checking through government databases. Here's how to do it:
1. Check through the traffic police website (traffic police.rf/check/auto):
- ๐น Enter VIN or license plate number.
- ๐น The system will show data from the PTS, including the year of manufacture.
- ๐น Minus: if the PTS is fake, the data will also be false.
2. Request through State Services:
- Login to gosuslugi.ru.
- Go to the โTransport and drivingโ section โ โVehicle checkโ.
- Enter VIN or license plate number.
- Receive a report with registration history, accidents and year of manufacture.
3. Contacting the MREO:
If the online check does not produce results, you can submit an official request to the traffic police. For this you will need:
- Application (sample on the traffic police website).
- Copy of passport.
- Receipt for payment of state duty (350 rubles in 2026).
The answer will come within 30 days.
โ ๏ธ Attention: If, when checking through the traffic police, the system displays the error โData not found,โ this may mean:- The car is not registered in Russia (for example, it was imported from abroad less than 3 months ago).
- VIN or license plate number entered incorrectly.
- The car is listed as stolen or scrapped.
If you are buying a used car, ask the seller to provide extract from the register of pledges (free on site reestr-zalogov.ru). This will save you from buying a credit car that could be repossessed.
Method 5: Online verification services - pros and cons
Paid and free services offer checking the car history by VIN or license plate number. We tested the top 5 services and compiled a comparison table:
| Service | Cost | Year of manufacture accuracy | Additional information | Cons |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Autocode | 399โ999 โฝ | 90% | Accident, mileage, owners, deposit | Sometimes it is wrong with the year of customs cleared cars |
| CarVertical | 499โ1 499 โฝ | 95% | Mileage, service history, export/import | Expensive, no data on road accidents in Russia |
| VINFormer | Free | 70% | Basic VIN decoding | Little data, often outdated |
| Drom.ru | Free | 60% | Prices similar to cars | No official data, only user reviews |
| Public services | Free | 99% | Official registration history | No data on accidents and repairs |
Recommendation: For maximum accuracy, use combination of services. For example:
1. Check the year by VIN via VINFormer (free).
2. Order a report from Autocode (paid, but cheap).
3. Check the data with an extract from the traffic police (free of charge at Public services).
If the data in all sources matches, you can trust it. If there are discrepancies, ask the seller for the original PTS and check it with the plate under the hood.
No online service guarantees 100% accuracy. Official data can only be obtained through the traffic police or the manufacturer.
What to do if the year of manufacture does not match
Have you found discrepancies in the year of manufacture? Follow the algorithm:
- Check the VIN on the car and in the title. If they are different, you have a fake PTS or a broken VIN. Refuse the deal.
- Check the manufacturer's plate. It is located under the hood or on the door pillar. The year on it must coincide with the PTS.
- Request a history through the traffic police department. If the year in the database differs from the title, the machine was re-registered after repair or theft.
- Contact your authorized dealer. For example, for Toyota this can be done via VIN check service.
Typical reasons for discrepancies:
- ๐ง Body replacement after an accident. The new body receives the current registration year.
- ๐ Error in PTS. Happens when registering a duplicate.
- ๐ Theft and interruption of numbers. In this case, the car may be on the wanted list.
- ๐ญ Pipeline Features. For example, Skoda Octavia 2020 could have been released in December 2019.
โ ๏ธ Attention: If the seller refuses to provide the original title or access to the VIN code, this is a reason to doubt the integrity of the transaction. According to statistics NBKI, 68% of used car fraud is related to hiding the real year of manufacture.
FAQ: Frequently asked questions about determining the year of a car
Is it possible to find out the year of manufacture by license plate without VIN?
No, the license plate itself does not contain information about the year. However, through it you can obtain data from the PTS (on the traffic police website or State services), but this will be the year from the documents that could have been falsified. Always check the VIN for accuracy.
What to do if the VIN code is erased or damaged?
If VIN is not readable:
- Try to find a duplicate on the door pillar or under the spare tire.
- Check with the PTS - if the number is on the document, but not on the car, this is a sign of fraud.
- Contact the traffic police to check the database of stolen cars.
Buying a car without a clear VIN is extremely risky!
Why is the year of manufacture different from the PTS in the Autocode report?
This can happen for several reasons:
- The title indicates the date of first registration, not release (for example, a car was released in 2019, but registered in 2020).
- The car was cleared through customs, and the database shows the year of import, not production.
- Error in the database Autocode (happens on cars imported from Europe).
In this case, request data directly from the manufacturer.
How to check the year of manufacture of a foreign car imported from the USA or Europe?
For imported cars:
- Use CarVertical or Carfax (for USA).
- Check the VIN through the manufacturer's decoder (for example, NHTSA for American cars).
- Order a customs clearance report (via Federal Customs Service of Russia).
For driven cars, the year in the title is often indicated as the year of customs clearance, not the year of release!
Can the year of manufacture in the PTS be later than the real one?
Yes, this happens in three cases:
- The car was in storage for a long time (for example, it was released in December 2019, but sold in 2020).
- After a major overhaul or replacement of the body, the year in the documents is updated.
- An error when registering a PTS (rare, but it does happen).
If the difference is more than 1 year, ask the seller for an explanation.
