State registration plates (state number) are a mandatory attribute of any vehicle registered in Russia. Their size, shape and even font are strictly regulated by regulations to ensure uniformity and legibility on the roads. However, many car owners are faced with questions: what dimensions are considered standard, how do license plates differ for passenger cars and motorcycles, and what will happen if a sign with deviations from the norm is installed?
In this article we will look at the current requirements GOST R 50577-2018 (valid since 2019), which replaced the outdated 1993 standard, and we will also analyze the nuances for different types of transport - from passenger cars up to trailers and motorcycles. We will separately focus on fines for discrepancies in size and rules for attaching license plates to help avoid problems with traffic police inspectors.
Official dimensions of license plates according to GOST R 50577-2018
Since August 1, 2019, an updated GOST R 50577-2018, which clearly defines the dimensions of registration plates for all categories of vehicles. The main parameters are shown in the table below. Important: the standard applies to both new license plates and those already issued - when replacing or re-registering a car.
| Vehicle type | Sign size (W ร H), mm | Character size (W ร H), mm | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Passenger cars, trucks up to 3.5 tons, buses | 520 ร 112 | 45 ร 75 (numbers), 30 ร 75 (letters) | Standard format for most vehicles |
| Trucks over 3.5 t, trailers | 345 ร 200 | 60 ร 100 (numbers), 40 ร 100 (letters) | Square shape for large vehicles |
| Motorcycles, mopeds, scooters | 190 ร 145 | 25 ร 50 (numbers), 15 ร 50 (letters) | Smaller format for two-wheelers |
| Tractors, self-propelled machines | 250 ร 200 | 50 ร 90 (numbers), 30 ร 90 (letters) | Special format for agricultural machinery |
Deviation from the specified dimensions not allowed. Even a slight change in dimensions (for example, 5โ10 mm) can be grounds for a fine. The only exceptions are vintage cars (over 30 years old), for which it is allowed to produce license plates according to old standards, but with mandatory approval from the traffic police.
โ ๏ธ Attention! Rooms made by GOST R 50577-93 (valid until 2019) are considered obsolete, but are not subject to mandatory replacement. However, if you re-register your car or lose your license plate, you will be given a license plate according to the new standard.
What is the difference between license plates for cars and trucks?
The main difference is shape and proportions. Passenger cars receive elongated rectangular license plates (520 ร 112 mm), while trucks and trailers receive square license plates (345 ร 200 mm). This is due to the fastening features:
- ๐ On passenger cars, license plates are usually installed on the bumper or a special niche, where the elongated shape looks organic.
- ๐ Trucks and trailers often have vertical holders, so the square format is easier to read.
- ๐ง The size of the symbols is also different: on cargo license plates the numbers and letters are larger (up to 100 mm in height versus 75 mm on passenger cars).
Interesting fact: until 2019, trucks used plates measuring 375 ร 135 mm, but the new GOST unified them with trailers, making them square. This simplified production and control.
Is it possible to use non-standard room sizes?
No, you can't. Any deviations from GOST are considered a violation clause 2.3.1 of the Russian Federation Traffic Regulations, which obliges drivers to ensure that registration plates are legible. There is a fine for this Part 1 Art. 12.2 Code of Administrative Offenses of the Russian Federation โ 500 rubles (or warning). However, in practice, inspectors often classify such a violation as โunreadable numbers,โ which threatens to 5,000 rubles or deprivation of rights for 1โ3 months (Part 2 of Article 12.2).
What is considered non-standard:
- ๐ Rooms with changed dimensions (for example, 500 ร 100 mm instead of 520 ร 112 mm).
- ๐จ Signs with an unregulated font, color or background (for example, โeuro number plateโ with black symbols on a white background).
- ๐ง Homemade license plates made of metal, plastic or other materials without certification.
- ๐ก Backlighting or frames that make it difficult to identify characters.
Exception - license plates for vintage cars (produced before 1990), which can be manufactured according to old standards, but only after agreement with the traffic police. In all other cases, non-standard sizes are equated to counterfeiting, which entails criminal liability for Art. 327 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation.
โ ๏ธ Attention! If you purchased a used car with non-standard plates, they must be replaced within 10 days after the purchase. Otherwise, a fine will be issued to you as the new owner.
How to check the license plate size before purchasing?
When purchasing new numbers (for example, if lost or replaced), it is important to make sure that they comply with GOST. Here checklist for verification:
โ๏ธ Check the license plate before purchasing
Pay special attention to quality of symbols:
- ๐ The paint should not rub off with light friction (check with your fingernail).
- ๐ Symbols must be clear, without blurring or chipping.
- ๐ก The background must be evenly colored (for standard numbers - white, for transit - red).
If in doubt, compare the number with official sample from GOST (Appendix A). Even minor deviations in the font (for example, narrowed letters โAโ or โMโ) can be a reason for a fine.
When purchasing numbers through State Services or MFC, the risk of receiving a non-standard sign is minimal - they are produced according to a single template. But in markets or in dubious workshops they often sell โwrongโ license plates with violations of GOST.
Fines for discrepancies in license plate sizes
The punishment depends on how the traffic police inspector classifies the violation. Three scenarios are possible:
- Unreadable numbers (Part 2 of Article 12.2 of the Administrative Code) - fine 5,000 rubles or deprivation of rights for 1โ3 months. This verdict is given if the symbols cannot be identified from a distance of 20 meters.
- Non-standard sizes or font (Part 1 of Article 12.2 of the Code of Administrative Offences) - fine 500 rubles or warning. This is a less strict measure if the numbers are readable, but do not comply with GOST.
- Number spoofing (Article 327 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation) - fine up to 80,000 rubles, compulsory labor or arrest for up to 6 months. Applies if the numbers are made at home or using someone elseโs data.
Case studies:
- ๐จ The driver installed license plates measuring 500 ร 100 mm (instead of 520 ร 112 mm) - a fine of 500 rubles.
- ๐จ Numbers with โEuro fontโ (black symbols on a white background) - a fine of 5,000 rubles, as they are difficult to read in the dark.
- ๐จ Homemade plastic license plates without a certificate are a criminal case under Art. 327 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation.
To challenge a fine, you can present certificate of conformity to the numbers (if any) or conduct an independent examination. However, the courts usually side with the traffic police if the sizes or font do not objectively comply with GOST.
How to correctly install a license plate according to GOST?
In addition to dimensions, GOST regulates installation rules registration plates. Basic requirements:
- ๐ Mounting location: front - in the center of the bumper or on a special platform; rear - on the left in the direction of travel (for trucks, attachment to a tow hitch is allowed).
- ๐ Height from ground: at least 30 cm for passenger cars and 20 cm for motorcycles.
- ๐ง Fastening: must prevent spontaneous displacement or loss of the number. Wire, tape or other unreliable methods are prohibited.
- ๐ก Backlight: The rear number must be illuminated with white light (for night visibility). The use of colored lamps or LEDs is prohibited.
Common installation errors:
- โ The numbers are fixed at an angle (deviation of no more than 3ยฐ is allowed).
- โ Symbols are covered with a frame, dirt or tuning elements (for example, โeyelashesโ).
- โ The front number plate is not installed in the center (the permissible offset is no more than 30 mm from the axis of symmetry of the car).
What happens if the number is set incorrectly?
If the inspector records that the number is installed in violation of GOST (for example, at an angle of more than 3ยฐ or not in the center), this is equivalent to โunreadable numbersโ with a fine of 5,000 rubles. This is checked especially strictly during technical inspection.
Additional rules apply for motorcycles and scooters:
- ๐๏ธ The number must be attached vertically (not horizontally!) on the rear of the vehicle.
- ๐๏ธ Installation on a special bracket is allowed, but it should not cover the symbols.
- ๐๏ธ It is prohibited to attach the number to the trunk or other removable elements.
Frequently asked questions about license plate sizes
Is it possible to drive with old license plates (pre-2019)?
Yes, if they were issued before the new GOST came into force (before August 1, 2019). They must be replaced only when the car is re-registered, lost or damaged. However, the inspector may issue a fine if the symbols have become unreadable (for example, paint has peeled off).
What should I do if the number is bent and does not fit correctly?
If the deformation is minor (for example, after an accident), you can try to straighten it carefully without damaging the paint. If the number is severely bent or the characters become unreadable, it will have to be replaced. Driving with a deformed number plate is equivalent to driving without it (a fine of 5,000 rubles or deprivation of rights).
Is it possible to order numbers with personal text (for example, name or date)?
No, in Russia it is prohibited to use any symbols other than those issued by the traffic police. Personal numbers (for example, with initials) can only be issued through special programs (for example, โBeautiful Numbersโ on the State Services portal), but their sizes and font must strictly comply with GOST.
What numbers are installed on electric cars?
From 2021, special license plates with a green stripe on the right and the letter โEโ in the series are issued for electric vehicles and hybrids. However, their dimensions remain standard: 520 ร 112 mm for passenger cars. The only difference is in the design.
What happens if I lost my number? Do I need to pay a fine?
The loss of the number plate itself is not punishable by a fine, but driving without it is. You are given 10 days for restoration (from the moment the loss is discovered). If you are stopped during this period, the fine will be 500 rubles (Part 2 of Article 12.2 of the Administrative Code). To restore, you need to contact the traffic police with your passport and STS.
Even if your number corresponds to GOST in size, but is covered with dirt, snow or a frame, this is equivalent to its absence. Regularly check that signs are clean and legible, especially before a long trip.
