Sentinsky Temple is one of the most mysterious and inaccessible attractions of Karachay-Cherkessia, hidden in the mountains at a height 2,200 meters. Getting to it by car from Dombay is not an easy task: serpentines, gravel sections and lack of cellular communications require careful preparation. This article will help you plan your route, avoid common mistakes and safely overcome 120 km mountain roads.
Many tourists mistakenly believe that you can get to the temple by any car. In practice, even SUVs with low-profile tires run the risk of getting holes or getting stuck on inclines. We analyzed the current state of roads (updated June 2026), interviewed local guides and compiled step by step route taking into account all the nuances - from the choice of fuel to backup routes in case of landslides.
Unlike popular tourist destinations, the road to the Sentin Temple does not have official signs. The last part of the journey is 18 km of dirt road with steep climbs 30%, where even Toyota Land Cruiser 200 I have to downshift. If you are driving a sedan or crossover without locks, be prepared to leave the car in the parking lot at the foot of the mountain and walk 4β5 km along the serpentine.
In this article you will find:
- πΊοΈ 3 route options (main, alternative and winter) with coordinates for the navigator;
- β½ Gas station map with fuel prices and quality reviews;
- β οΈ List of critical areas roads where accidents most often occur;
- π Recommendations for car preparation (tire pressure, crankcase protection, spare tire).
1. Preparing the car: what to check before the trip
The road to the Sentinsky Temple is combination of asphalt, gravel and dirt, so even if your car is in good condition, you canβt do without preparation. The first thing you should pay attention to is ground clearance. Minimum ride height for a comfortable ride - 200 mm. Owners Renault Duster or Hyundai Creta You will have to drive carefully: in some areas, stones may touch the crankcase protection.
Pay special attention tires:
- πΉ Protector: depth no less 6 mm (on wet gravel there is less risk of skidding).
- πΉ Pressure: pump up the tires 0.2β0.3 atm above normal - this will reduce the risk of breakdown on sharp stones.
- πΉ Tire type: summer βall-seasonβ is not suitable - take it M+S (Mud + Snow) even in June.
Don't forget about spare wheel and jack. On the last 18 km of the road, assistance from a tow truck will cost 10β15 thousand rubles, and mobile communications only work for MegaFon (and even then in fragments). Also take:
- π§ Balloon wrench (gravel roads often cause nuts to loosen themselves).
- π’οΈ 1β2 liters of oil (on steep climbs the engine runs under load).
- π Powerbank (the navigator discharges faster due to lack of network).
Check ground clearance and crankcase protection|
Inflate the wheels to +0.2 atm|
Fill the tank full (fuel consumption will increase by 30%)|
Take the spare tire and jack|
Download offline maps (2GIS or Maps.me)-->
Critical moment: if your car no differential lock, on steep gravel climbs the wheels will slip. In this case, it is better to park on coordinates 43.3124Β° N, 41.6873Β° E and walk.
2. Main route: Dombay - Sentinsky temple (120 km, 3β4 hours)
The shortest and most popular route goes through Teberda and Khasaut village. Total travel time - 3β4 hours (excluding stops). We divide the route into 5 key points with coordinates for the navigator:
| Plot | Distance | Road type | Travel time | Coordinates |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Dombay - Teberda | 25 km | Asphalt (good condition) | 30β40 min | 43.3512Β° N, 41.7186Β° E |
| Teberda - Khasaut | 40 km | Asphalt with holes | 1 hour | 43.4167Β° N, 41.7500Β° E |
| Khasaut - turn to the temple | 30 km | Gravel, serpentine | 1 hour 10 min | 43.3306Β° N, 41.6508Β° E |
| Turn - parking near the temple | 18 km | Primer, stones | 1 hour 20 min | 43.3124Β° N, 41.6873Β° E |
| Parking - temple (on foot) | 4 km | Trail | 1 hour | 43.3011Β° N, 41.7025Β° E |
Important: after the village Hasaut begins serpentine with 12 sharp turnswhere scree occurs. In the summer of 2026, repair work was carried out on this area, but the quality of the pavement remained poor. On descents, use engine braking (engage in 2nd or 1st gear) to avoid overheating the pads.
On 30th kilometer after Khasaut you will see a sign βSentin Temple ββ. Starts here gravel road, where it is better to keep the speed at the level 20β30 km/h. Local residents advise don't stop on the side of the road β due to the narrow road, passing oncoming traffic can be a problem.
If you are traveling to UAZ Patriot or Niva Travel, engage all-wheel drive in advance - the rear axle may skid on wet gravel.
The last section (18 km) is the most difficult:
- πͺ¨ Stones up to 20 cm in size are lying right on the road.
- π¦ Streams cross the route in 3 places (depth up to 15 cm).
- π§ Landslides possible after rain (check forecast for rp5.ru).
SUV (UAZ, Toyota LC, Nissan Patrol)|
Crossover (Duster, Kia Sportage)|
Sedan (not recommended)|

3. Alternative route through Arkhyz (150 km, 4β5 hours)
If the main road is closed (for example due to a landslide), you can drive through Arkhyz. This path is longer by 30 km, but the asphalt surface is better. The route is suitable for cars with clearance from 180 mm (for example, Skoda Kodiaq or Volkswagen Tiguan).
Key waypoints:
- Dombay β Nizhny Arkhyz (70 km, 1 hour 20 minutes).
- Nizhny Arkhyz - Upper Arkhyz (20 km, 30 min, serpentine).
- Upper Arkhyz - turn to Khasaut (40 km, 1 hour).
- Continue along the main route (see section 2).
Advantages of this path:
- β Less gravel areas.
- β More gas stations and cafes.
- β Beautiful views of Zelenchuk Lakes.
Disadvantages:
- β 1β1.5 hours longer.
- β Paid: at the entrance to Arkhyz take eco-fee 200 rubles from the car.
Advice: if you are traveling through Arkhyz, stop by Special Astrophysical Observatory of the Russian Academy of Sciences (coordinates: 43.6436Β° N, 41.4306Β° E). This is the largest telescope in Eurasia - you can take unique photos.
4. Winter route: features and risks
C November to May the road to the Sentinsky temple is official closed for travel. However, some tourists risk going to snowmobiles or SUVs with winter tires and chains. In 2023, two tourists were stuck on the pass due to an avalanche; rescuers evacuated them only a day later.
If you still decide to go on a winter trip:
- βοΈ Wheel chains mandatory (even for Toyota Hilux).
- π₯ Stove and warm clothes: the temperature at night drops to -15Β°C.
- π‘ Walkie-talkie or satellite phone: No connection.
β οΈ Attention: In the area between Khasaut and the temple, strong winds blow in winter, blowing snow from the mountains. Visibility may drop to 5 meters β without driving experience in such conditions, it is better not to take risks.
Alternative for winter travel - hiking from Dombay with an overnight stay in shelter "Alibek" (coordinates: 43.3210Β° N, 41.6789Β° E). The route takes 2 days, but requires preparation: tent, sleeping bag (-20Β°C), trekking poles.
5. Gas stations, food and overnight stays: where to stop along the way
On the route only 3 refills, and their fuel is more expensive 5β10% than in Cherkessk. It's better to refuel at Dombay (price for AI-95 β 52β54 rub/l in 2026) and take reserve canister (10β20 l).
| Refueling | Place | Price AI-95 (2026) | Quality | Coordinates |

- βΊ Camping "Gorge" (in front of Khasaut) - tent 300 β½, shower is hot.
β οΈ Attention: in Khasaut and on the way to the temple no shops. Take food and water with you (minimum 2 l per person). Local residents sell souvenirs and tea, but the prices are 2-3 times higher.
6. Tips for driving in the mountains: how to avoid getting stuck and breaking your car
Mountain roads require special driving techniques. Here 5 rulesthat will save your car:
- Don't brake on descents. Use
2nd or 1st gear- this way you will avoid overheating of the brakes. - On gravel, do not turn sharply. Turn the steering wheel smoothly, otherwise the car will skid.
- Don't stop on the climbs. If you stall, move away
half-depressed clutch, otherwise the wheels will spin. - Overtake only on straight lines. Trucks carrying firewood often drive through blind turns.
- Monitor the engine temperature. On steep climbs it can rise up to 110Β°C β turn on the stove to maximum.
If you are traveling to automatic, use modes:
- π
L (Low)- for steep climbs; - π
2 or 1β for descents; - π
Snow/Mud- if the road is wet or muddy.
What to do if you get stuck:
- Place it under the wheels stones or branches.
- Turn off
ESP(if any). - Get moving smoothly, without slipping.
- If it doesn't help - roll back and accelerate on the move.
What to do if a tire bursts on gravel?
1. Donβt brake sharplyβslow down gradually.
2. Turn on the emergency lights and pull over to the side of the road (if there is one).
3. Raise the car with a jack, placing it under it wide stone (the soil is soft).
4. Change the tire quickly - at an altitude of 2,000 m the temperature drops by 10-15Β°C per hour.
7. What to take with you: a complete list of things
In addition to the standard kit (documents, first aid kit), for a trip to the Sentinsky Temple you will need:
- π§ Offline maps: download 2GIS or Maps.me (Google Maps doesn't work well).
- π¦ Flashlight: Itβs dark in the temple, and it may get dark on the way back.
- π Sneakers with protectors: From the parking lot to the temple, walk on the stones.
- 𧀠Gloves: The stones on the road are sharp - they will come in handy if you have to push the car.
- π§ Water and food: at least 2 liters of water and high-calorie snacks (nuts, chocolate).
For car:
- π οΈ Tool set: keys, screwdrivers, electrical tape.
- π§ Towing cable: in case you get stuck.
- π’οΈ Fuel canister (10 l): in case the gas station in Khasaut is closed.
- π Starting device: The battery may die from the cold.
β οΈ Attention: if you are going to diesel, refuel only at proven gas stations. In Khasaut they sell diesel fuel of dubious quality - there is a risk of clogging the filter.
