Optimal routes to Seydozero: from Murmansk, St. Petersburg and Moscow
The choice of route depends on your departure city, type of car and time of year. We will look at the three most popular options, considering road condition in 2026 and current workarounds.
1. From Murmansk (the shortest route is ~250 km)
This is the easiest and fastest route that takes 4–5 hours excluding stops. Main stages:
- 🚗 Murmansk → Apatity (180 km along the highway
R-21 "Cola"): good quality asphalt, many gas stations and cafes. - 🏔️ Apatity → Revda (30 km): turn to
188th km of highway R-21on the road18A-107(signpost “Lovozero”). The road is asphalted, but with potholes. - 🌲 Revda → Lovozero (40 km): the asphalt ends, gravel with primer sections begins. It is better to reduce the speed to 40–50 km/h.
- ⚠️ Lovozero → Seydozero (25 km): the most difficult section. Dirt road with stones, swamps and a ford across the river Seydjok. In the rain, travel is only possible by SUV.
2. From St. Petersburg (~1200 km, 2 days travel)
The route runs through Karelia and the Murmansk region. The best option with an overnight stay in Petrozavodsk or Kandalaksha:
- 🚗 St. Petersburg → Petrozavodsk (420 km along
E18): paid areas, good asphalt. - 🛣️ Petrozavodsk → Kandalaksha (500 km along
R-21 "Cola"): monotonous road, few gas stations in the area Umba–Kandalaksha. - ❄️ Kandalaksha → Murmansk → Seydozero (see route from Murmansk above).
Important: on site Kandalaksha–Murmansk Strong side winds often blow - be careful when overtaking trucks.
3. From Moscow (~1800 km, 3 days travel)
The longest route that requires careful preparation. We recommend dividing the journey into three days with overnight stays in Vologda and Petrozavodsk:
- 🚗 Moscow → Vologda (500 km along
M-8 "Kholmogory"): toll sections, traffic jams on the way out of Moscow. - 🌉 Vologda → Petrozavodsk (700 km via
A-119andR-21): the road is winding, there are a lot of trucks. - ⛽ Petrozavodsk → Murmansk → Seydozero (see above).
Road conditions in 2026: what to expect along the way
The main problem when traveling to Seydozero is last section from Lovozero. In 2026 the situation is as follows:
| Section of road | Coverage type | State (2026) | Recommendations |
|---|---|---|---|
| Murmansk — Apatity | Asphalt | Good, pits only at exits | Speed up to 90 km/h |
| Apatity - Revda | Asphalt/gravel | Potholes, potholes at joints | Reduce speed to 60 km/h |
| Revda - Lovozero | Gravel/soil | Dust in summer, dirt in autumn | Keep a distance of 100+ m |
| Lovozero — Seydozero | Ground with stones | Swampy areas, ford | SUV or high crossover only |
In the summer of 2026 on the site Lovozero–Seydozero are underway renovation work: Local residents report that fresh gravel has been laid in some places, but deep ruts form after the rains. In September-October the road becomes almost impassable due to muddy roads - it is better to plan your trip for June-August.
In winter, the path is complicated by snow drifts, but the dirt road freezes, and you can even drive on Lada 4x4. The main thing is to take it with you shovel, cable and snow chains.
⚠️ Attention: Navigators (including Yandex.Navigator and Google Maps) often lead along non-existent forest roads. Download offline maps Osmand with tracks from experienced travelers or use the coordinates of the parking point: 67.9123°N, 35.0124°E.
How to prepare a car for a trip: checklist
If you are driving to Seydozero, your car should be ready for off-road, cold and lack of services. Here is the minimum set of preparation:
Check ground clearance (minimum 200 mm for the last section)
Install crankcase and transmission protection
Change oil and filters (synthetic 5W-40 for the north)
Check tire pressure (reduce to 1.8–2.0 atm for priming)
Take a spare wheel + repair kit
Install a winch or differential lock (for SUVs)
Check the battery (capacity not lower than 60 Ah)
Fill up a full tank + 20 liter canister (for the return trip) -->
Pay special attention tires:
- 🚙 Summer: off-road tires type BFGoodrich All-Terrain or Yokohama Geolandar.
- ❄️ Winter: studded tires with deep tread (for example, Nokian Hakkapeliitta 10).
- 🔧 All-season: doesn't fit — on a primer it wears off quickly, and in winter it becomes tan.
If you have sedan or low crossover (type Hyundai Creta), be prepared to leave your car in the parking lot in Lovozero and walk ~10 km. Locals offer services delivery by ATV (cost ~1500–2000 RUR per person).
Turn off before traveling ESP (exchange rate control system) - on a primer it will interfere, blocking the wheels in the mud. But don’t forget to turn it back on on the asphalt!

Rules of conduct on Seydozero: do's and don'ts
Seydozero is not only a tourist attraction, but also sacred place for the Sami. There are unspoken rules here that are important to follow:
🙏 What is allowed
- 📸 Photograph landscapes (but not people without permission).
- ⛺ Place tents only in designated places (Camping "Seyd").
- 🔥 Light fires in metal barbecues (firewood is sold locally).
- 🚶 Walk around designated paths (the swamps around the lake are dangerous!).
🚫 What is prohibited
- 🎣 Fishing without permission (fine up to 5000 ₽).
- 🚬 Smoking and drinking alcohol near sacred stones (seidov).
- 🗑️ Leaving garbage (prohibited by the law of the Murmansk region).
- 🐕 Carry dogs with you (a habitat for wild animals).
Local residents are loyal to tourists, but may refuse help, if you behave disrespectfully. For example, you should not listen to music loudly or try to touch seids (sacred stones) - this is considered a bad omen.
What are seids?
Seids are sacred stones of the Sami, which, according to legend, have magical powers. They may look like ordinary boulders, pillars, or even unusually shaped trees. The Sami believe that seids protect the land and bring good luck to those who respect them. Damaging or moving the seid is considered a great sin and can “cause” trouble.
What to take with you: complete list of things
There are no shops, pharmacies or service centers on Seydozero, so you need to take everything you need with you. Here's the full checklist:
🚗 For car
- 🔧 Spare wheel + jack + wheel wrench.
- 🛠️ A set of tools (screwdrivers, pliers, electrical tape).
- 🔋 Starter charger or “cigarette lighter”.
- 💧 Antigel (if you are traveling in winter).
- 🧲 Towing cable (minimum 5 m).
🏕️ For camping
- ⛺ Tent (better 4 season with insulation).
- 🔥 Gas burner + cylinder (open fires outside barbecues are prohibited on Seydozero).
- 🍳 Dishes, knife, cutting board.
- 🧊 Thermos and heating pads (the nights are cold even in summer).
- 🧴 Mosquito and tick repellent (taiga species are very aggressive).
👕 Personal items
- 🧥 Warm jacket (even in summer the temperature at night drops to +5°C).
- 👟 Waterproof shoes (swampy areas).
- 🧦 Thermal underwear and wool socks.
- 🧴 Sunscreen (in the north the sun is deceptively bright).
- 💊 First aid kit (required: iodine, bandage, pain reliever, allergy medicine).
The most common mistake tourists make is underestimating the weather. In summer on Seydozero it can be +25°C during the day and 0°C at night, and the wind increases the feeling of cold. Take things for both winter and summer!
