Why Ladoga skerries are worth visiting by car

Ladoga Skerries is a unique natural complex in northwestern Russia, where rocky islands and narrow straits create landscapes reminiscent of Norwegian fjords. Traveling here by car gives you freedom of movement that is not possible with public transport. You will be able to explore remote bays, stop at wild beaches and change routes on the fly, without depending on bus or boat schedules.

By car you will get to hidden gems, inaccessible to tourists on excursion cars: for example, to the cape Konevets with its famous monastery or to Wallam Islands, where you can spend the night in a tent overlooking Ladoga. In addition, the car allows you to carry with you everything you need for a comfortable stay - from a tent and barbecue to a supply of water and food, which is critical in regions with limited infrastructure.

But the trip requires careful preparation: from checking the technical condition of the car to studying rules for driving through protected areas. In this article - routes current for 2026, taking into account road repairs and new restrictions for motor tourists, as well as tips on how to avoid fines and not damage your car off-road.

Preparing the car: what to check before the trip

The Ladoga skerries are not only paved roads, but also dirt roads, forest paths and areas with poor surface conditions. Even if you don't plan to go off-road, suspension and tires must be in perfect condition. Pay special attention to:

  • 🔧 Chassis: Check the shock absorbers, ball joints and silent blocks. On bumps and holes they receive increased load.
  • 🚗 Clearance: if your car has less ground clearance 160 mm, avoid dirt roads - there is a risk of damaging the crankcase protection.
  • 🛞 Tires: the best option is all-season tires with a residual tread depth of at least 4 mm. Summer tires with wear more than 50% may not cope with wet gravel.
  • 🔋 To the battery: There are no service stations in remote areas, so the battery must be charged at 100%, and the terminals are clean.

Don't forget about first aid kit, fire extinguisher and warning triangle - their absence may result in a fine of up to 3 000 ₽ (Article 12.5 of the Code of Administrative Offenses of the Russian Federation). Also take a spare tire: on the highway A121 (Sortavala - Petrozavodsk) mobile communication is lost, and it will be difficult to call a tow truck.

Check tire pressure (recommended: 2.2 atm front, 2.4 atm behind)|

Fill the tank full (in some areas there are no gas stations 100+ km)|

Make sure the headlights and brake lights are working|

Take the tow rope and jack|

Check oil and coolant levels

⚠️ Attention: If your car is equipped with a system Start-Stop, turn it off before driving on dirt roads. Frequent automatic engine starts on uneven surfaces accelerate wear on the starter.

Routes to Ladoga Skerries from St. Petersburg

From St. Petersburg you can get to the skerries along three main routes. The choice depends on your goals: whether you want to get to key attractions faster or prefer scenic but longer roads.

Route Distance Travel time Features
Via Priozersk (road A129) 180 km 2.5–3 hours The shortest route, but with sections of road repair. Suitable for visiting Wallam Islands.
Via Vyborg (highway E18 + A121) 220 km 3–3.5 hours Good coverage, but paid sections. Convenient for inspection Russians and Konevetsky Monastery.
Through Lodeynoye Pole (route P21) 250 km 4 hours The most picturesque, but long route. Passes through Svir and Pitkäranta.

We recommend route via Priozersk for your first visit: it combines speed and accessibility to the main attractions. Leave early in the morning (before 7:00) to avoid traffic jams leaving St. Petersburg and catch the ferry before Vallama (the departure of the latter is in 16:00).

Rules for parking and movement in protected areas

The Ladoga skerries are partly part of Nature Reserve "Lake Ladoga" and the Ladoga Skerries National Park. There are strict rules for auto tourists here:

  • 🚫 Prohibited driving off the roads onto the side of the road in forested areas - a fine of up to 5 000 ₽ (Article 8.39 of the Code of Administrative Offenses of the Russian Federation).
  • 🅿️ Parking is only allowed in designated areas (concrete or gravel areas with a “Parking” sign).
  • 🌲 For driving on forest roads (for example, to bay Devil's chair) required resolution from the park administration (cost - 300 ₽/day).
  • 🚗 On some islands (for example, Konevets) Passage of personal vehicles is prohibited - only walking routes.

Pay special attention Wallam Island: there is a system in place here "smart parking". When arriving by ferry, you are required to pay a parking fee (200 ₽/day) via terminal or mobile application "Parking in Karelia". Otherwise, you risk getting a fine on the way out.

⚠️ Attention: Between June 1 by September 30 on islands of Mantsinsaari and Konevets introduced limit on the number of cars - no more 50 cars per day. Arrive early or reserve your place through the website ladoga-park.ru.
💡

If you plan to spend the night in a tent, check in advance the zones where camping is permitted. For example, on Riekkalansaari island there is a special area with a toilet and barbecue (coordinates: 61.4532°N, 31.0781°E).

Where to stay: campsites, hotels and wild holidays

The infrastructure for motor tourists in the Ladoga Skerries is moderately developed: there are no hotel chains, but there are cozy guest houses and equipped campsites. The choice depends on your travel style:

  • 🏕️ For wildlife lovers: free camping areas are available on Riekkalansaari islands and Heinäsenmaa. But keep in mind that there is no electricity or running water.
  • 🏡 For a comfortable stay: guest houses "Skerries" (price from 2,500 ₽/day) or "Ladoga Hotel" (from 3 200 ₽) in Pitkärante.
  • For road travelers: camping "Ladoga Coast" (cost 800 ₽/day with car) with shower and kitchen.

If you plan wild camping, follow the rules:

  • Light a fire only in designated places (metal barrels or stone platforms).
  • Don't leave trash - the fine for pollution is up to 10 000 ₽.
  • Required for fishing resolution (cost - 500 ₽/day, is issued in Rybnadzor).
What to take with you for an overnight stay?

Even if you plan to stay in a guest house, take a sleeping bag (nights can be cold even in summer), a headlamp, and a power bank. For wild camping, add a gas stove, a water filter (Lake Ladoga water is not always safe to drink raw), and a first-aid kit with tick removal tools—encephalitis is common in these areas.

Top 5 attractions accessible by car

The Ladoga skerries are rich in natural and historical sites, but not all of them are accessible by car. We have selected five seats, where you can reach without walking:

  1. Wallam Island - located here Valaam Monastery, one of the most beautiful in Russia. There is a ferry to the island from Priozersk (cost of travel for a car - 1 800 ₽ both ways). On the island itself, cars move only on authorized roads.
  2. Cape Konevets - known Konevetsky Monasterybased in XIV century. You can get there by dirt road from Gromovo village (distance 12 km, SUV required).
  3. Bay Devil's Chair - a rock formation that resembles a chair. Parking in 500 m from the bay (further on foot). Coordinates: 61.4011°N, 31.1039°E.
  4. Mantsinsaari Island - located here caves and labyrinths, carved into the rocks. There is a ferry to the island from Pitkäranta (cost 1 200 ₽ per car).
  5. Ruskeala Waterfall - although formally these are not skerries, they are located along the way (in 30 km from Sortavala). Admission is paid (300 ₽), but parking for cars is free.

To visit Valaam and Mantsinsaari necessarily check the ferry schedule in advance - during the season they run once every 2–3 hours, and less often in the fall. Ferry contacts:

  • 📞 Vallam: +7 (812) 734-55-55
  • 📞 Mantsinsaari: +7 (814) 33-5-12-34

Seasonal features: when is the best time to go and what to avoid

Ladoga skerries are beautiful all year round, but optimal time for a road trip — with June to September. During this period:

  • 🌞 Temperature is kept at the level +18…+25°C, and the nights are cool (+10…+15°C).
  • 🚗 Roads dry out after spring floods, and the risk of getting stuck in the mud is minimal.
  • ⛴️ Ferries operate on a full schedule (flights are reduced in the off-season).

However, each season has its nuances:

Season Pros Cons Tips
June–August Warm weather, all ferries are operating, many excursions. Lots of tourists, high housing prices, mosquitoes. Book ferries and hotels in advance. Take repellent!
September–October Few people, beautiful autumn nature, cheap housing. The weather is changeable and ferries run less frequently. Follow the forecast. Take warm clothes.
May The first warm days, there are no mosquitoes yet. The roads are washed out, not all ferries are running. Drive only in an SUV. Check the ferry schedule.
⚠️ Attention: B November–April most ferries to skerries don't go, and the roads are not cleared of snow. If you drive in winter, take snow chains and a full tank of fuel - there may not be gas stations on the highways.
💡

Best time to travel - end of June or early September: the weather is stable, there are fewer tourists, and the nature is as beautiful as possible.

What to do in case of a breakdown or accident

In the Ladoga skerries, mobile communications do not work everywhere, so save important numbers in advance:

  • 🚨 Unified Rescue Service: 112 (works even without connection).
  • 🚗 Tow truck in Sortavala: +7 (814) 33-6-12-30.
  • 🚔 Traffic police of Karelia: +7 (814) 2-76-11-19.
  • 🏥 Hospital in Pitkäranta: +7 (814) 33-5-12-03.

If the car breaks down:

  1. Place a warning triangle at a distance 30 m from the vehicle (on the highway) or 15 m (in a populated area).
  2. Try calling a tow truck through the app "Tow Truck 112" (works in Karelia).
  3. If there is no connection, go to the nearest populated area - on the highways A121 and A130 every 20–30 km there are villages.

When Road accident:

  • Take photographs of the accident scene and damage.
  • If there are no casualties, register europrotocol (the form must be in the car).
  • In Karelia there are increased fines for leaving the scene of an accident - up to 30 000 ₽.
💡

If you have CASCO, check with the insurance company whether the policy covers evacuation in Karelia. Many companies (eg. RESO or Ingosstrakh) include this region in the coverage area only by additional agreement.
