A motor home is not just transportation, but a whole way of life. But before you go on a free trip, you need to understand the legal side: what rights are requiredto drive such a home-car hybrid. An error in choosing a category can result in a fine of up to 15,000 rubles or even deprivation of rights for 3–6 months. But the rules depend not only on the weight and dimensions, but also on the type of hitch, the purpose of the motorhome and even the year of its manufacture.

1. Motorhome up to 3.5 tons: is a category B license enough?

Most serial motorhomes sold in Russia fall under category B. This applies to models based on:

  • 🚐 Mercedes-Benz Marco Polo (weight ~2.8–3.2 t)
  • 🚐 Ford Transit Custom Nugget (up to 3.5 t)
  • 🚐 Hymer Exsis-i (compact versions)
  • 🚐 Domestic "Gazelle-campers" (if the limit is not exceeded)

Key condition: maximum permissible mass (MWP) should not exceed 3,500 kg, and the number of passenger seats (except for the driver) is no more than 8. It does not matter how much your luggage or equipment inside weighs: the main thing is the parameters in the vehicle title.

Important! If the vehicle title lists a weight of 3,490 kg, but you install an additional battery, solar panels and a water tank, the total weight may exceed the limit. In this case, you will need to re-register the vehicle or obtain a license of a higher category.

⚠️ Attention: A category B license allows you to tow a trailer weighing up to 750 kg. If your trailer is heavier (eg. Knaus Boxstar 600 weighs 850 kg), category required BE.

How to check your weight? Look for the line F.2 in the PTS - it is indicated there permissible maximum weight. If there is a value there 3,500 kg or less - category B is suitable.

2. Motorhomes from 3.5 to 7.5 tons: when is category C needed?

If your RV is built on a truck chassis (eg. Iveco Daily or MAN TGE) and its mass exceeds 3,500 kg, you will need category C. This applies to:

  • 🏠 Large class motorhomes A-Class (for example, Dethleffs Globebus)
  • 🏠 Modified vans with reinforced frame
  • 🏠 Motorhomes with trailers, if the total weight exceeds 3.5 tons

Moreover, category C does not give the right to transport passengers (more than 8 people). If your motorhome has sleeping capacity for 10 people, category D may be required (more on this below).

How to get category C?

  1. Complete training at a driving school (1.5–2 months).
  2. Pass theory (tickets categories C and B) and practice at the training ground and in the city.
  3. Obtain a medical certificate with the mark “fit to drive a category C vehicle.”

Exception: If your motorhome weighs, for example, 4,200 kg, but you do not plan to travel abroad, you can register it as truck with superstructure. In this case, category C will not be required, but there will be problems with parking and travel to some EU countries (categories are strictly monitored there).

What happens if you drive a 5 ton motorhome with category B?

Example: Your motorhome weighs 3,300 kg and your trailer weighs 900 kg. Total weight = 4,200 kg → required BE. If the trailer weighs 700 kg and the motorhome 3,000 kg → category B is enough.

For heavy road trains (weighing over 7.5 tons), a category will be required CE. This is relevant for:

  • 🚛 Motorhomes on truck chassis with large trailers.
  • 🚛 American RV-class (for example, Thor Motor Coach).

Important! Category BE allows you to drive a road train weighing up to 7,000 kg (if the vehicle weight is ≤ 3.5 tons). For heavier compounds - only CE.

4. Motorhomes with passenger seats: when is category D needed?

If your motorhome is designed to be transported more than 8 passengers (not counting the driver), you will need category D. This is a rare case, but relevant for:

  • 🚌 Converted buses (for example, Mercedes-Benz Sprinter with 12 beds).
  • 🚌 Campers used for commercial tours (with driver and guide).

Category D means:

  • 📝 Strict medical commission (including a psychiatrist and narcologist).
  • 📝 Training at a driving school (3–4 months).
  • 📝 Annual medical examinations to confirm the category.

Category D automatically includes the right to drive vehicles of categories B and C, but not vice versa.

⚠️ Attention: If the PTS indicates 8 passenger seats, and you added 2 more sleeping seats, this is considered a conversion. Without making changes to the documents, you may be fined for non-compliance with the registration data of the vehicle.

5. Features for DIY motorhomes and van conversions

Many enthusiasts remake GAZelle, Ford Transit or Mercedes Sprinters in mobile homes with your own hands. There are three key points here:

  1. Changing the vehicle category. If you turned a cargo van into a passenger van (added windows, sleeping places), you need to re-register the title through the traffic police.
  2. Checking weight. Installing furniture, water and gas tanks adds weight. If it exceeds 3.5t, category C will be required.
  3. Insurance. OSAGO for homemade motorhomes often costs more due to increased risks.

Example: you bought GAZelle-Next with an MRP of 3,500 kg and made a camper out of it. After installing the kitchen, shower and batteries, the actual weight increased to 3,700 kg. Now you need a category C license, otherwise in case of an accident the insurance company will refuse to pay.

  • 🇺🇸 In the US, RVs over 11,000 lbs (≈5 t) require a license Non-Commercial Class B.
  • 🇫🇷 In France, a category is required for trailers weighing >750 kg B96 or BE.

Travel recommendations:

  1. Check national legislation countries visited (for example, on the website ADAC for Europe).
  2. Complete international driver's license (if your license does not have Latin transliteration).
