On November 1, 2020, Russia officially introduced electronic vehicle passport (EPTS) β a digital analogue of a traditional paper document. But if you can touch a paper PTS and immediately understand what kind of form it is, then with the electronic version everything is not so obvious. What does she look like? Where is it stored? Is it possible to print it out and present it to the traffic police inspector? These questions concern many car owners, especially those who buy a used car or register it for the first time.
In this article we will look at What does an electronic vehicle title look like? in practice: from the appearance in your personal account to the data structure and verification methods. You will find out how the EPTS differs from the paper version, where you can see it, and why some cars are still sold with a βliveβ form. And also - how not to run into scammers who forge electronic documents.
Spoiler: an electronic PTS is not a PDF file in the mail or a screenshot from your personal account. This is an entry in the state register, access to which is available through special services. But first things first.
What is an electronic PTS and why was it introduced?
Electronic vehicle passport (EPTS) is digital recording in a single database Unified Register of Information on Vehicles (ERSTS), which replaces a paper form. It was introduced at the initiative of the Ministry of Economic Development and the State Traffic Safety Inspectorate to simplify the procedures for registering, selling and disposing of cars. Main reasons for the transition:
- π Fight against counterfeits: paper PTS were often counterfeited to βroll backβ the mileage or hide the criminal history of the car.
- π Simplifying transactions: There is no longer a need to hand over a physical document when selling - a digital record is sufficient.
- π Ecology: reduction of paperwork.
- β‘ Processing speed: registering a car with the traffic police now takes 20 minutes instead of several hours.
Important: EPTS has the same legal force as a paper PTS. Traffic police inspector during a traffic stop does not have the right to demand to see it on the phone screen β it is enough to show your license and STS. But when selling or registering a car, access to the electronic version is required.
From July 1, 2022 all new cars produced in Russia are required to have only an electronic PTS. Paper forms are no longer issued, except in rare cases (for example, for cars over 30 years old or imported from abroad under special rules).
What does an electronic PTS look like: sample and structure
Unlike a paper PTS, which is a pink A4 form with watermarks, electronic PTS does not have a physical medium. This is a set of data in the database, which can be seen as:
- π± Digital cards in your personal account on Public services or website Autocode.
- π PDF file with a seal and signature, which is generated by the system upon request.
- π Extracts from the register, available through a notary or auto verification services.
This is what a typical electronic PTS looks like in your personal account (example with State services):
Main sections of EPTS:
- General information: VIN, make, model, year of manufacture, color, body type.
- Specifications: engine power, volume, fuel type, weight, permitted load.
- Owner information: Full name or name of legal entity, date of ownership.
- Restrictions and encumbrances: arrests, bails, bans on registration actions.
- History of changes: all operations with PTS (re-registration, data changes).
Externally, the electronic version resembles a table with data, but with key differences from the paper version:
| Parameter | Paper PTS | Electronic PTS |
|---|---|---|
| Format | Pink A4 form with protection | Digital record in the ERSTS database |
| Signatures | Hand signatures of inspectors | Electronic signature (EDS) of the traffic police |
| Availability | Owner's physical document | Access via Public services, Autocode, notary |
| Data Update | New form for changes | Automatic update in the registry |
| Fake | Possible (watermarks, printing) | Virtually excluded (blockchain, digital signature) |
Please note: in electronic PTS there is no column for marks on the passage of maintenance β this information is now stored in a separate database EAISTO. There is also no field for recording the replacement of license plate units (engine, body), since this data is automatically updated in the registry when changes are registered.
If you were shown an βelectronic PTSβ in the form of a regular PDF without a digital signature or access through Public services - this is 100% fake. This EPTS is always linked to the ownerβs account and has a status in the registry.
Where and how can you see your electronic PTS
Only car owners or persons authorized by them (for example, notaries when registering transactions) have access to the electronic PTS. Here all official methods get data:
- π Personal account on Public services:
- Login to gosuslugi.ru.
- Go to section
Transport and driving β My vehicles. - Select a car - a card with EPTS data will open.
- π Service Autocode (paid):
On the website avtokod.mos.ru can be ordered extract from the EPTS register (cost ~350 rubles). To do this, you will need the VIN or license plate number of the vehicle.
- βοΈ Through a notary:
When drawing up a purchase and sale agreement, the notary may request a current extract from the EPTS to check the cleanliness of the car.
- ποΈ In MREO traffic police:
During a personal visit to the department, you can ask to print out the current version of the EPTS with a stamp.
- Show the car card in your personal account State services (in front of you).
- Send an official extract from Autocode (with stamp and date).
- Issue a power of attorney in your name to access the EPTS.
- π Photoshopped PDFs with data from a real EPTS, but with a changed VIN or mileage.
- π Fake sitessimulating Public services or Autocode.
- π³ Fake statements with a non-existent seal and signature.
- Ask the seller to show the EPTS in his personal account State services (not a screenshot!).
- Order your own extract to Autocode and compare the data.
- Check VIN through service traffic police.rf/check/auto β there should be a note about the presence of EPTS.
- π Legal force: the EPTS printout does not have the force of the original - it is simply a copy of the data from the registry.
- π Traffic rules: according to clause 2.1.1 of the traffic rules, the driver is required to carry only driver's license, STS and OSAGO policy.
- π Data verification: the inspector can clarify information about the car through his database without requiring documents from you.
- When crossing the border by car (customs services of some countries require the presentation of a vehicle title).
- When taking out insurance or a loan - some banks ask to provide information about the car.
- Log in to your personal account at Public services.
- Find the section with your car and click "Print".

- π If the car is over 30 years old (for them, a paper PTS remains mandatory).
- β‘ If you value the speed of registration (registration in 20 minutes).
- π If you are afraid of forgery or loss of documents.
- π± If you actively use digital services (Public services, Autocode).
- Apply via Public services (section "Replacing PTS").
- Visit the traffic police MREO to confirm your identity.
- Receive notification of transfer to electronic format.
- Check EPTS via Autocode or Public services (don't believe the screenshots!).
- Make sure that the seller is the current owner (check your full name in the EPTS with your passport).
- Complete the DCT and the transfer deed (even with EPTS they are required).
- After purchasing, immediately re-register the car in your name (within 10 days).
- Collect evidence (photo of the car, data from STS).
- Write an application to the MREO or through Public services.
- Attach documents confirming the correct data (for example, a vehicle title from the manufacturer).

- π When stopped by an inspector, the car will be listed as the previous owner.
- Pay the state fee (RUB 850 for registration).
- Apply via Public services or at MREO.
- Get a new STS (EPTS is updated automatically).

Attention! No other sites (like βcheck PTS online for freeβ) have access to the EPTS database. If you are offered to βview the electronic PTSβ on a third-party resource, this is a scam.
If you buy a car with an electronic title, the seller is obliged to provide you with access to the data in one of the following ways:
Make sure that the VIN in the EPTS matches the number on the body|Check the history of the owners (are there any frequent resales)|Pay attention to the βRestrictionsβ section (are there any arrests or liens)|Check the data on the engine and body with the actual ones (are there any replacement of license plate units)-->
How to distinguish a fake electronic PTS from a real one
Fraudsters quickly adapted to the innovation and learned to fake electronic PTS. Most often they use:
Signs of a fake:
| What to check | Real EPTS | Fake EPTS |
|---|---|---|
| Data source | Only Public services, Autocode, notary | Any other site or file by email |
| Electronic signature | There is a digital signature of the traffic police (checked via CryptoPro) | There is no signature or it is βbrokenβ |
| Formation date | Current (not older than 30 days) | Old date or no date |
| VIN and license plate number | Coincide with the data on the car and in the STS | Varied or suspiciously βcleanβ |
π How to check authenticity:
β οΈ
Attention! If the seller refuses to provide access to the EPTS or offers βalternative verification methods,β this is a reason to refuse the transaction. In 2023, more than 12,000 cases of fraud with electronic PTS were recorded (data from the Ministry of Internal Affairs).
What to do if you find a fake EPTS?
If you have already bought a car and found out that the EPTS is fake:
1. Immediately contact the police with a report of fraud (Article 159.3 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation).
2. File a lawsuit to declare the transaction invalid.
3. Block registration actions through the traffic police so that scammers do not resell the car further.
4. If the car is pledged or seized, contact the bank/bailiffs to resolve the issue.
In most cases, it is possible to get your money back only through court, so before purchasing always check the EPTS yourself!
Is it possible to print out an electronic PTS and present it to the inspector?
This question worries many car owners, especially those who are used to carrying a stack of documents with them. Answer: You can print it out, but you donβt need to show it to the inspector. Here's why:
However there is two caseswhen an EPTS printout can be useful:
π How to print EPTS correctly:
β οΈ
Attention! If you are taking an EPTS printout abroad, check the requirements of the destination country in advance. Some (for example, Kazakhstan) only recognize the original paper PTS or a notarized extract.
Electronic PTS does not replace the CTS (registration certificate). Even if you only have an EPTS, you are required to have a plastic STS with you or a digital copy of it in the State Services Auto application.
What to do if you have lost access to the electronic PTS
Since EPTS does not have a physical medium, it cannot be βlostβ. However, you can lose access to data - for example, if:
How to restore access:
π If you bought a car with EPTS:
The seller must unlink the car from your account within 10 days after sale. If this does not happen:
β οΈ
Attention! If the previous owner has not unlinked the car from his account, he can theoretically gain access to the EPTS data even after the sale. Always check this through Autocode after the purchase.
Paper vs electronic PTS: which is better and when
Although electronic PTS has become the standard, the paper version still has advantages in some situations. Let's compare:
| Criterion | Paper PTS | Electronic PTS |
|---|---|---|
| Ease of storage | Must be protected from loss/damage | Always available online |
| Processing speed | Long queues at the traffic police station | Registration in 20 minutes |
| Risk of counterfeiting | High (watermarks fake) | Practically zero |
| Check upon purchase | Can be checked visually | Needed Public services or Autocode |
| Travel abroad | All countries accept | May require a notarized extract |
| Replacement if damaged | You need to pay a state fee (800 rubles) | Free, updates automatically |

π Is it possible to convert a paper PTS into an electronic one?
Yes, it's free and takes 1 day. To do this:
After translation, paper PTS canceled - it cannot be used for registration activities.
From 2026, paper PTS are planned to be completely abolished, even for older cars. If you still have a βliveβ form, it makes sense to convert it into electronic format in advance to avoid queues.
