Method 4: Personal visit to the traffic police (for 100% certainty)

If online methods do not provide a clear answer or you doubt the reliability of the data, the most reliable way is to contact traffic police registration department. It's free, but it will take time.

What to take with you:

  • 📄 Passport of a citizen of the Russian Federation.
  • 📋 A copy of the purchase and sale agreement (if you are the seller).
  • 🔑 Vehicle data (VIN, license plate number, STS - if available).

If you are refused, request a written refusal and file a complaint with the prosecutor's office or a higher traffic police unit.

Method 5: Check through an insurance company (if you have an MTPL policy)

If you still have a valid policy OSAGO for a sold car, you can check the status of the owner through the insurance company. This is relevant if less than a year has passed since the sale (policy validity period).

How to check:

  1. Call your insurance company (the number is on your policy).
  2. Provide vehicle details and policy number.
  3. Check to see if there have been any changes to the owner's details.

Method 6: Verification through a notary (if the DCP was certified)

If the car purchase and sale agreement was certified by a notary, you can ask him for a copy of the document with a mark on the registration of the transaction. Notaries are required to store such data and can confirm the fact of transfer of ownership rights.

What to do:

  • 📞 Call the notary who completed the deal.
  • 📋 Request an extract or a copy of the policy document with a registration mark.
  • 🔍 Check if the document contains a stamp or record of the transfer of rights to the new owner.

💡 Helpful tip: When selling a car, always take it from a notary or traffic police copy of the policy document with a registration mark. This will protect you from fraud and make it easier to verify in the future.

Method 7: Alternative methods (forums, social networks, databases)

If the official methods do not help, you can try unofficial ways, but they are less reliable and require caution:

  • 🔍 Motorist forums (for example, Drive2 or Avto.ru): sometimes owners leave reviews about their cars indicating VIN.
  • 📱 Social networks: search by license plate or VIN in VKontakte, Facebook or Telegram- chats.
  • 📊 Auto Club Databases: some clubs of specific brand owners (for example, Toyota Club) maintain their registers.

⚠️ Attention: These methods do not guarantee authenticity and can only be used as an additional check. Never make decisions based on information from unofficial sources!
