A VIN number (Vehicle Identification Number) is a unique βpassportβ of a car, which contains information about the manufacturer, model, year of manufacture and even equipment. Without it, it is impossible to obtain insurance, register the car or check the history through traffic police, Autocode or CarVertical. But where exactly should I look for this code? The answer depends on the brand, year of manufacture and even body type.
Many drivers get lost when they need to quickly find the VIN: either look under the hood, or look on the windshield, or rummage through documents. In this article we will look at all possible locations of the VIN code - from standard to non-obvious, and we will also explain how to read it correctly and what to pay attention to when checking. We will pay special attention to the nuances for foreign cars, domestic cars and machines with a modified design.
What is a VIN number and why is it needed?
VIN (Vehicle Identification Number) is a 17-digit code that is assigned to a vehicle at the factory and remains unchanged throughout its service life. It consists of three parts:
- π WMI (World Manufacturer Identifier) β the first 3 characters indicating the manufacturer (for example,
XTAβ Toyota,ZFAβ Fiat). - π VDS (Vehicle Descriptor Section) β symbols 4 to 9, describing the model, body type and engine.
- π’ VIS (Vehicle Identifier Section) β the last 8 characters, where the year of manufacture, plant and serial number are encrypted.
Without VIN it is impossible:
- π Checkout OSAGO or CASCO.
- π Check car history via traffic police, Autocode or foreign services.
- π Register the car or deregister it.
- π§ Order original spare parts (many dealers require VIN for selection).
β οΈ Attention: If the VIN code on the body and in the documents do not match, this may mean that the car is stolen, damaged or has serious legal problems. Before buying such a car, be sure to check it through official website of the traffic police.
Where to look for the VIN number on a car: 7 main places
Manufacturers place the VIN in several standard locations, but their location may vary depending on the make and model. Below - full list of places, where you should look for the code, taking into account the features for different types of cars.
1. Windshield (most visible place)
Most modern cars have the VIN stamped at the bottom of the windshield on the driver's side. It can be seen from the outside without opening the hood or doors. This method of placement is required for cars produced after 2000 (by standards UNECE).
What it looks like:
- π Sticker or engraving on the glass in the driverβs viewing area.
- π Usually located 5β10 cm from the edge of the glass.
- πΌοΈ Can be coated with transparent varnish to protect against counterfeiting.
2. Under the hood (for most foreign cars)
If there is no VIN on the glass (or the windows are tinted), check the following areas under the hood:
- π On anterior septum (between the engine compartment and the passenger compartment).
- π§ On frame or spars (more often in SUVs and pickups).
- π© On cylinder block (rare, but occurs in older Mercedes-Benz or BMW).
Example for Toyota Camry:
The VIN is located on the vertical panel on the right (when looking at the engine).
It is often covered with a plastic protection - you need to carefully bend it back.
3. At the door threshold (typical for American and Japanese cars)
At the cars USA specifications (for example, Ford, Chevrolet, Dodge) VIN is often stamped on threshold of the driver's door. To see it:
- Open the front left door.
- Sit down and look at the metal threshold (sometimes the code is hidden under a rubber seal).
- Use a flashlight if necessary.
β οΈ Attention: On some models (for example, Nissan Qashqai) The VIN on the threshold can be duplicated on a barcode sticker. Do not confuse it with the body number!
4. In the cabin: under the seat or on the floor
The old ones domestic cars (for example, VAZ 2107, GAZelle) and some European models VIN may be:
- πͺ Under driver's seat (you need to remove the fastenings and raise the seat).
- πͺ On B-pillar (between the front and back doors).
- π On sticker in the glove compartment (more often in Volkswagen or Skoda).
Example for VAZ 2110:
The VIN is stamped on the floor under the passenger side carpet.
To see it, you need to remove the mat and wipe the surface.
5. On the frame or side members (for SUVs and trucks)
For machines with a frame structure (for example, Toyota Land Cruiser, Nissan Patrol, UAZ) VIN is often located:
- π On right side member (passenger side).
- π§ On frame cross member (front or back).
- π© On suspension bracket (rare, but occurs in Jeep).
To access these areas you may need jack or inspection hole.
6. In the trunk (for hatchbacks and station wagons)
For some models (for example, Volkswagen Golf, Opel Astra) VIN is duplicated in the trunk:
- π¦ On rear panel (under the casing).
- π§ On trunk shelf (if it is removable).
- πͺ On rear door hinge (for hatchbacks).
7. On the rating plate
On many cars (especially European and Korean) VIN is duplicated on nameplate with technical characteristics. It can be found:
- π Under the hood (on the partition or fender).
- πͺ On the driver's door pillar.
- π In the glove compartment (on the back of the lid).
Example of a sign for Hyundai Solaris:
| Parameter | Meaning |
|---|---|
| VIN | Z94CB41ABCR123456 |
| Model | Solaris 1.6 MT |
| Year of manufacture | 2021 |
| Body number | CB41ABCR123456 |
Important: On some cars (for example, Mercedes-Benz or BMW) VIN on the plate may be abbreviated (last 7 characters). Find the full code on the body!
How to find VIN in car documents
If physical inspection of the car is difficult (for example, the car is parked or in another city), the VIN can be found from the documents. It is indicated in:
- π PTS (Vehicle Passport) - on the title page in the column βIdentification number (VIN)β.
- π STS (Certificate of Registration) - in the βVINβ line.
- π Sales and purchase agreement - if the seller indicated it in the car description.
- π§ Service book β on the first page or in the section with car data.
Example from PTS:
Vehicle make, model: TOYOTA CAMRY 2.5 AT
Identification number (VIN): JTEBU5JR0J5123456
β οΈ Attention: If the VIN in the documents and on the body do not match, this may be a sign of:
- π¨ Interrupted number (hijacking or criminal history).
- π Errors when preparing documents (less often).
- π§ Replacement of the body or frame (requires re-registration with the traffic police).
Before purchasing such a car, be sure to ask certificate from the traffic police about registration actions!

How to decipher the VIN number: basic rules
The VIN contains encrypted information about the car. You can decrypt it using online services (for example, VinDecoderz, AutoDNA) or manually. Here's what the main symbols mean:

If the VIN is on the body unreadable (due to corrosion, an accident or deliberate stripping), follow the algorithm:
- π Check the documents β PTS, STS, purchase and sale agreement.
- πΈ Take a photo of the VIN location and contact traffic police for recovery.
- π§ If the number is interrupted - file a police report (the car may have been stolen).
- π For recovery an examination will be required (it is carried out by accredited laboratories).

Without it, the car will not be registered! What happens if you drive with an unreadable VIN?
If the VIN is erased or damaged, the traffic police inspector can:
1. Detain the car for inspection (Article 27.13 of the Administrative Code).
2. Issue a fine of 500β800 rubles for inconsistency of data (Article 12.1 of the Administrative Code).
3. Send for examination (at your expense).
In the worst case, the car may be confiscated if theft or license plate number is suspected.
How to check a VIN for authenticity: 3 ways
Fraudsters often falsify or alter the VIN to hide the theft or accident. Here's how to check the authenticity of the code:
1. Visual inspection
The original VIN has clear signs:
- π Smooth fonts no file marks.
- π¨ Same engraving depth (there should be no βwavesβ).
- π§ No chips or weld marks next to the number.
2. Check digit verification
The 9th character of the VIN is check digit, which is calculated using a special algorithm. If it does not match the calculation, the VIN is fake. You can check it on the sites:
- π VinDecoderz
- π VinCheck
3. Check through the traffic police
The most reliable way is to request extract from the register of pledges and arrests on the website traffic police. If the VIN is listed in the database as stolen or with altered markings, you cannot buy such a car!
It is also useful to check the history via:
- π Autocode (paid report with data on accidents, mileage, liens).
- π CarVertical (information from Europe and the USA).
- π Public services (free arrest check).
If, when checking the VIN through the traffic police, you see the entry βVehicle wantedβ or βChange of markingβ, immediately stop the transaction - the car may be stolen!
Frequently asked questions about VIN numbers
π Is it possible to drive without a VIN on the body?
No. According to Traffic rules of the Russian Federation (clause 2.1.1), the absence or unreadability of the VIN is equivalent to driving a vehicle with malfunctions in which operation is prohibited. The traffic police inspector can:
- Issue a fine 500 β½ (Article 12.1 of the Administrative Code).
- Detain the car for inspection (Article 27.13 of the Administrative Code).
- Send for examination (at your expense).
If the VIN is erased due to corrosion, you need to restore it through the traffic police.
π Where to look for VIN on motorcycles and ATVs?
For two-wheeled vehicles, the VIN is located:
- ποΈ On frame (usually on the right side of the engine).
- π§ On steering column (under plastic).
- π B PTS (similar to cars).
U ATVs VIN is often stamped on rear frame beam.
π Can VIN consist of 16 or 18 characters?
No. Standard ISO 3779 provides strictly 17 characters (numbers and Latin letters, except
I, O, Q). If you see:
- π’ 16 characters β the check digit (9th character) may be missing.
- π’ 18+ characters - this is not a VIN, but a body or chassis number.
Exception: for old American cars (before 1981) VIN could have been shorter, but such cars are extremely rare in Russia.
π§ Is it possible to change VIN legally?
Yes, but only in one case: if the number damaged in an accident or due to corrosion. To do this you need:
- Pass examination in an accredited laboratory.
- Get conclusion about the impossibility of restoring the old VIN.
- Contact traffic police to assign a new number.
Self-check VIN punishable by imprisonment for up to 2 years (Article 326 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation).
π° How much does it cost to check VIN via Autocode?
Cost of the report Autocode (2026):
- π Basic report (accident, mileage, deposit) β 349 β½.
- π Advanced report (photo, owners, customs) β 599 β½.
- π Full story (including foreign data) β 999 β½.
You can only check for free presence of restrictions (arrests, bails) through traffic police.
