Why the MTPL insurance number is so important - and where to look for it

Policy number OSAGO — this is a unique identifier of your compulsory insurance contract. Without it, it is impossible to register an accident according to the European protocol, or check the validity of insurance through the database RSA or restore a lost policy. You will also need this number when selling a car, applying for a loan secured by a car, or even when parking in paid parking lots, where discounts are available for insured cars.

The problem is that most drivers remember their insurance number for no longer than a week after purchasing a policy. And when you suddenly need it urgently, panic and searches begin. Fortunately, there is at least 7 proven methods find out the OSAGO number, even if the policy itself is lost or is located in another city. Next, we will analyze each of them - from the most obvious to little-known life hacks.

Important: if you are looking for a number CASCO (and not OSAGO), the algorithms will be different - we wrote about this separately at the end of the article.

Method 1: View the number directly on the OSAGO policy

The easiest option is to get the policy itself and study it carefully. The MTPL insurance number is always indicated in top of the document, next to the series (if there is one). The number format depends on the year of issue:

  • 📄 Paper policy (until 2017): the number consists of 10 digits, sometimes with a letter prefix (for example, XXX 1234567890). Look for it in the upper right corner under the inscription “Series and number”.
  • 📱 Electronic policy (e-OSAGO): number from 15 digits, without letters. Typically shown in bold in the title of the document.
  • 🔄 Policies from 2023: number may contain 20 characters (numbers + Latin letters) due to a format change in the database RSA.

If the policy is in paper form, check also back of the document - sometimes the number is duplicated there in the form of a barcode. For electronic policies (PDF), use the document search function (Ctrl+F) and enter the query “number”.

💡

If you have an old-style policy (before 2015), the number could be indicated in the format AA 123456789. Such documents are still valid, but their data may not be displayed in online services.

Method 2: Find the number in the personal account of the insurance company

If you applied for compulsory motor liability insurance through the official website of the insurer (for example, Ingosstrakh, RESO-Garantiya, SberInsurance), the policy number is necessarily saved in your personal account. Algorithm of actions:

  1. Log in to the insurance company’s website (use logins from State services, if there is a binding).
  2. Go to the “My Policies” or “Contracts” section.
  3. Find the active MTPL contract - the number will be indicated on the policy card.
  4. If necessary, download an electronic copy of the document (usually available in PDF format).

⚠️ Attention: Some insurance companies (eg. AlfaInsurance) automatically delete data on policies older than 3 years. If your contract was drawn up a long time ago, this method may not work.

Method 3: Check the number through State Services

Portal Public services allows you not only to pay fines or register with the traffic police, but also see your MTPL data. To do this:

  1. Go to the site Public services and log in.
  2. In the search bar, enter “MTPL Check” and select the appropriate service.
  3. The window that opens will display your current policy number, as well as insurance company details and validity period.

If the policy is not issued in your name (for example, the car is leased or you are registered as a driver), this method will not work. In this case, request the data from the policy owner.

Method 4: Find out the number through the RSA database (Russian Union of Auto Insurers)

RSA is an organization that maintains a unified register of all existing MTPL policies. To find your insurance number:

  1. Go to the site RSA policy checks.
  2. Enter Vehicle VIN or license plate number (no spaces).
  3. The system will show the details of the current policy, including its number.

⚠️ Attention: The RSA database is updated with a delay of up to 3 days. If you have just issued a policy, it may not be in the system. Also, the service does not show data on policies issued before 2017.

Verification method What you need to know Data update period Suitable for old policies?
Insurance personal account Account login/password Instantly Yes (if not deleted)
Public services Authorization on the portal Up to 24 hours No (only from 2019)
RSA database VIN or license plate number of the car Up to 3 days No (since 2017)
Mobile application Installed insurance software Instantly Yes

Method 5: Use the insurance company's mobile application

Many insurers offer their apps for smartphones, where you can not only buy a policy, but also view data of existing contracts. Popular apps:

  • 📱 SberInsurance — section “My policies” → “MTPL”.
  • 📱 Ingosstrakh Online — “Documents” tab.
  • 📱 RESO-Garantiya — “My contracts” menu.
  • 📱 AlfaInsurance — section “Car insurance”.

If the application is not installed, download it from App Store or Google Play and log in with the same data as on the insurance website. The main advantage of this method is The policy number is available even without the Internet (if the document has been uploaded previously).

What should I do if the application does not show the policy number?

Sometimes mobile applications do not display the full number, but only the last digits. In this case try:

1. Update the application to the latest version.

2. Reinstall it (first take a screenshot of the policy data if it is partially visible).

3. Contact insurance support via chat in the application itself - they will send complete data by email.

Method 6: Request data from an insurance agent or by calling a hotline

If all online methods do not work, the classic way remains is to call the insurance company. To do this:

  1. Find the hotline number on the back of your policy or on the insurer's website.
  2. Prepare identification data:
    • 🆔 Passport details of the policy owner.
    • 🚗 VIN or license plate number of the car.
    • 📅 Approximate date of registration of OSAGO.
  • Tell the operator what you need policy number for verification or restoration.
  • ⚠️ Attention: Never call the operator CVV code bank card or passwords from your personal account. Fraudsters may pose as insurance employees to gain access to your data. Official companies only request passport data and information about the car.

If the policy was issued by an agent, contact him directly - he should have a copy of your contract. The agent's contact details are usually indicated on the policy itself or on the payment receipt.

Method 7: Restore the number through the bank (if payment was by card)

Few people know, but the bank can help restore your insurance data, if you paid for it with your card. To do this:

    1. Log in to your bank's personal account (for example, Sberbank Online, Tinkoff, VTB).
    2. Find the payment with the word “OSAGO” or the name of the insurance company in the transaction history.
    3. Open the payment details - sometimes it is indicated there contract number or a receipt with policy details is attached.
    4. If there is not enough information, contact bank support and request extended statement by operation.
    5. This method does not always work, but in 30% of cases it helps to find at least part of the data, which can then be used to restore the policy through the insurance company.

      💡

If you paid for compulsory motor insurance through aggregators (for example, Compare.ru or Inshurin), check the order history on their websites - the policy number may also be stored there.

What should I do if I couldn’t find my insurance number?

If none of the methods work, you have two options:

      1. Reinstate the MTPL policy:
        • Contact the insurance company office with your passport and PTS.
        • Write an application for reinstatement (usually free of charge).
        • Get a duplicate policy with the same number.
    6. Apply for a new policy:
      • If the old OSAGO has expired, it is easier to buy a new one.
      • Use Public services or insurance websites for registration at a discount.

⚠️ Attention: Driving without a valid MTPL is punishable by a fine 800 rubles (Article 12.37 of the Administrative Code). If you cannot restore the number, but know that the policy is valid, print out the data from your personal account or take a photo of the screen with the number - this is enough for the traffic police inspector.
