Installing a built-in dishwasher is a process that requires not only connecting communications, but also proper installation of the decorative door. It is the facade that hides the technical filling, harmoniously fitting the unit into the kitchen set. Errors at this stage can lead to misalignment, poor closure, or even damage to the thermal insulation of the device.

There are two main ways of fixing a decorative panel, which differ radically in design and algorithm of actions. Sliding method is considered more modern and convenient, since it compensates for furniture shrinkage, while rigid fastening requires perfect precision during initial assembly. Understanding the differences between these systems is key to successfully completing the job.

Before you start drilling holes, you must carefully study the instructions for your model, since the location of fasteners may vary from one manufacturer to another. Bosch, Electrolux, Candy and other brands often use unique installation schemes, ignoring which will lead to defects. Below we will analyze in detail all the nuances of the process.

⚠️ Attention: Before starting any work, be sure to unplug the dishwasher from the electrical outlet. Installation of the façade often requires tilting the housing or working in close proximity to electrical contacts.

Preparation of tools and materials

The quality of the result directly depends on how well you prepared for the process. You'll need a standard DIY kit, but there are a few specific tools you can't do without. The main tool will be a screwdriver with a set of bits, since tightening dozens of screws by hand is ineffective and time-consuming.

It is critical to use a tape measure and a building level to mark holes. Even a minimal distortion of 1-2 millimeters can become noticeable after installing a heavy wooden door. Also prepare masking tape, which will help fix the template or the facade itself during marking without damaging the paintwork.

  • 🛠️ A screwdriver or drill with reverse for tightening screws.
  • 📏 Tape measure, square and building level for accurate markings.
  • 🔨 Hammer and core for preparing drilling points (so that the drill does not slip).
  • ✂️ Metal scissors (if you need to trim plastic elements).

Pay special attention to fasteners. The dishwasher usually comes with special screws of a certain length. Using longer screws is strictly prohibited, as they can damage internal communications or thermal insulation. If there are no complete fasteners, select analogues strictly according to the length specified in the manual.

Determining the type of facade fastening

The first and most important step is to identify the mounting system provided by the manufacturer. The entire further installation strategy depends on this. Most often found in modern models sliding method (sliding system), which is also called the “on runners” system. Its essence lies in the fact that the facade is attached to the car door only in the upper part, and the lower part simply rests on a special hook or loop, being able to move.

The second option is rigid mount. In this system, the decorative panel is screwed to the metal door of the PMM along the entire perimeter or at several points along the height. This method is considered outdated, since when the kitchen furniture shrinks or the facade swells from humidity, the machine door may “lead” and it will no longer close tightly.

How to distinguish the system visually? Look at the front panel of the car. If you see vertical guides or special grooves on the sides, and the kit comes with a metal template strip with slots, this is a sliding system. If the door just has a row of threaded holes across the entire surface, then you have a rigid type of fastening.

⚠️ Attention: Never try to adapt a façade for rigid mounting if the machine is designed for sliding installation, and vice versa. This will disrupt the opening mechanism and may cause the hinges to break.
💡

Save the paper template that comes with the kit, or make an exact copy of it from cardboard. You will need it if you decide to replace your dishwasher in a few years.

Marking and preparation of furniture facade

The marking process requires maximum concentration. An error of a millimeter can mean that the holes on the façade do not line up with the holes on the car door. To simplify the task, manufacturers put a special installation template. This is a sheet of paper or thin cardboard with markings applied, which must be placed on the inside of the furniture door.

Before gluing the template, make sure that the facade is lying on a flat surface. Clean the inside of any dust and chips. The template is aligned to the top edge and sides of the door. If the template requires fastening through special bushings, make sure that they are installed in the required holes in advance.

Using a sharp awl or punch, mark the centers of future holes through the holes in the template. Do not use a drill for this right away, as there is a high risk of moving it away from the wood fibers or the MDF structure. After marking, you can carefully drill holes with a drill of the diameter specified in the instructions (usually 2-3 mm for guides or directly for a self-tapping screw).

☑️ Check before drilling

Done: 0 / 4

The drilling depth should be less than the thickness of the facade so as not to damage the front decorative part. If you are working with solid wood, be especially careful: the structure of the wood may not be uniform, and the drill may go sideways along a knot.

Installation using a sliding system (Sliding)

This method is the most preferred for modern kitchens. Its main advantage is the independence of the movement of the facade and the car door during temperature expansion. Installation begins with installation upper mounts. The facade panel is applied to the PMM door, and self-tapping screws are screwed through the prepared holes in the upper part.

The lower part of the facade is not screwed tightly. The design of the dishwasher includes special hooks or hooks that fit into matching holes or grooves on the inside of the furniture door. When the PMM door is closed, these elements interlock, but allow the facade to move slightly vertically.

It is important to set the tension correctly. If the facade dangles, it will rattle when the machine is running. If it is clamped too tightly, the principle of the sliding system will not work. Adjustment is carried out using screws on the hinges of the dishwasher itself, which we will discuss in the section on adjustment.

Parameter Rigid mount Sliding mount
Fixation points Over the entire height of the door Only at the top
Reaction to kitchen shrinkage Possible misalignment and jamming Compensated automatically
Difficulty of installation High (need accuracy) Medium (there is a template)
Risk of damage to the PMM Higher (lots of drilling) Minimum
Why is the sliding system better?

When the humidity in a room changes, wood tends to expand or contract. In a rigid system, this puts enormous stress on the dishwasher hinges, which can cause them to break out. The sliding system allows the facade to “walk” independently of the metal door.

Rigid mounting system

If your model involves rigid fixation, the process will be more labor-intensive. Here it is necessary to ensure that the holes match along the entire plane. Often this requires temporarily removing the metal door from the dishwasher, placing it on the façade, leveling it, and only then drilling through holes or using the existing perforation as a guide.

Fastening is carried out with special screws that pass through holes in the metal and enter the end or plane of the furniture panel. Critical Do not overtighten the screws. Excessive force can deform the thin sheet of metal of the PMM door, which will lead to a leak or jamming of the mechanism.

During installation, pay attention to the length of the heat-insulating gasket (usually felt or foam tape), which is located between the door and the facade. It should not crumple into a lump or, conversely, crawl out over the edges, interfering with closure. Its task is to prevent overheating of the furniture door from a running machine.

⚠️ Attention: When mounting firmly, be sure to check whether the screw heads do not touch the internal mechanisms of the machine when the door is fully opened. The gap should be at least 1-2 mm.

Adjustment of the position and height of the façade

Once the facade is installed, the work does not end. You'll likely find that your car door is crooked or protruding from the plane of your kitchen cabinets. Used for correction adjusting screwslocated on the front of the dishwasher (usually visible if you remove the base or look from below).

Rotating these screws clockwise raises the corresponding angle of the machine, counterclockwise lowers it. This allows you to align the top line of the PMM façade in line with the adjacent cabinets. The tension of the springs is also adjusted if the machine is equipped with a system AirDry or auto-opening.

Don't forget to check the operation of the door closers (if any). After installing a heavy wooden facade, the load on the mechanism increases. It may be necessary to move the cables or chains to different positions on the arms to allow the machine to move the door all the way on its own.

💡

The main criterion for correct installation is that the top line of the dishwasher façade should be a continuation of the line of the countertop or adjacent cabinets without steps.

Common installation errors

Even experienced craftsmen sometimes make annoying mistakes that have to be corrected. One of the most common mistakes is incorrect choice of screw length. As mentioned earlier, a fastener that is too long will hit the plastic housing or electronic board located behind the front panel.

The second mistake is ignoring thermal insulation. Some users, wanting to make it stronger, remove the felt gasket between the facade and the door. This cannot be done: without it, the wooden door will heat up to 60-70 degrees, which can lead to delamination of the MDF or fading of the film.

The third mistake is misalignment during initial fixation. If you haven't checked the level before finally tightening all the screws, it will be extremely difficult to correct this later, especially in a sliding system where the top holes are already drilled.

  • 🚫 Using self-tapping screws of greater length than those included in the kit.
  • 🚫 Removing the thermal insulation pad for a “tighter” fit.
  • 🚫 Ignoring level checking in two planes (vertical and horizontal).
  • 🚫 Excessive force when twisting, leading to metal deformation.
Is it possible to drill through the facade if the template does not match?

It is strictly not recommended to drill through without preliminary fitting. If the holes on the template do not line up with the holes on the machine, the template may be applied incorrectly (upside down or misaligned). Check the markings on the top and bottom. If you drill extra holes in an expensive facade, it will be almost impossible to disguise them.

What to do if the façade is heavier than recommended?

Each PMM model has a limit on the weight of the facade (usually up to 10-12 kg). If your solid oak door weighs more, the hinges may not hold up, and the machine will not be able to open the door on its own or will do so with a jerk. In this case, consider replacing the facade with a lighter one (MDF instead of solid wood) or use external hinges if the kitchen design allows it.

Do I need to lubricate the hinges after installing the facade?

Factory lubricant in dishwasher hinges is usually designed to last a lifetime. However, if you have installed a heavy façade and feel it is tight, you can use silicone lubricant (spray). Important: Do not use lithium grease or grease, as they can damage the plastic elements of the mechanism and collect dust.

What if after installation there is a gap between the facade and the door?

A small gap (1-2 mm) is acceptable and even necessary to compensate for expansion. If the gap is large and a knock is heard, check whether the lower hooks in the sliding system are seated correctly. Sometimes it is necessary to place a thin spacer (for example, a piece of cardboard or rubber) in the contact area of the hook to eliminate the backlash, but not to fix the facade tightly.
